چکیده

We present first results from the MAssive Cluster Survey (MACS), a new large-scale X-ray survey designed to find and characterize very massive, distant clusters of galaxies. Based on X-ray detections in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey, MACS aims to compile a sample of more than 200 X-ray luminous clusters at z ≥ 0.3, about 50 times the number of EMSS clusters in the same redshift and luminosity range. The MACS sample is uniquely suited to investigate cluster evolution at redshifts and luminosities poorly sampled by all existing surveys. At the time of writing the MACS sample comprises 41 clusters with measured redshifts of 0.3 ≤ z ≤ 0.56 and X-ray luminosities in excess of 6 × 10 erg s (0.1–2.4 keV). This early sample is thus already twice as large as the high-z, high-luminosity subsets of the EMSS, BCS, and REFLEX cluster samples taken together. An additional 85 MACS clusters with photometric redshifts z ≥ 0.3 are scheduled for spectroscopic observation. From a preliminary analysis of a statistically well defined subsample of the 25 X-ray brightest MACS clusters we conclude tentatively that negative evolution is not significant at the highest X-ray luminosities (LX > 1 × 10 45 erg s) out to redshifts of z ∼ 0.4. Our findings thus extend the no-evolution result obtained by many serendipitous ROSAT cluster surveys at lower luminosities.

Scaling relations in dynamical evolution of star clusters

We have carried out a series of small scale collisional N-body calculations of single-mass star clusters to investigate the dependence of the lifetime of star clusters on their initial parameters. Our models move through an external galaxy potential with a logarithmic density profile and they are limited by a cut-off radius. In order to find scaling relations between the lifetime of star cluste...

Probing the Large-Scale Structure Around the Most Distant Galaxy Clusters from the Massive Cluster Survey

We present maps of the cosmic large-scale structure around the twelve most distant galaxy clusters from the Massive Cluster Survey (MACS) as traced by the projected surface density of galaxies on the cluster red sequence. Taken with the Suprime-Cam wide-field camera on the Subaru telescope, the images used in this study cover a 27× 27 arcmin area around each cluster, corresponding to 10× 10 Mpc...

The discovery of two distant, massive clusters of galaxies in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey

We discuss the radio, optical, and X-ray properties of two newly discovered, very X-ray luminous, distant clusters of galaxies. Both systems were noted as cluster candidates in a crosscorrelation of data from the WENSS radio survey and the ROSAT All-Sky Survey. Follow-up observations performed by us and the Massive Cluster Survey (MACS) team confirmed both sources as distant galaxy clusters. Th...

0 MACS : A quest for the most massive galaxy clusters in the universe

We describe the design and current status of a new X-ray cluster survey aimed at the compilation of a statistically complete sample of very X-ray luminous (and thus, by inference, massive), distant clusters of galaxies. The primary goal of the MAssive Cluster Survey (MACS) is to increase the number of known massive clusters at z > 0.3 from a handful to hundreds. Upon completion of the survey, t...

ماده تاریک یا دینامیک دیگر؟

Allowing the energy of a gravitational field to serve partially as its own source allows gravitating bodies to exhibit stronger fields, as if they were more massive. Depending on degree of compaction of the body, the field could be one to five times larger than the Newtonian field. This is a comfortable range of increase in field strength and may prove to be of convenience in the study of vel...
